By Maruxa Pita Lissarrague
Seeing the same things over and over can make us indifferent. Living in the Philippines since 1960, I have seen children of all ages in Manila, which has 14 million inhabitants, begging, selling, and wandering about in the streets and plazas, when they should be in school. There are 11 million children not being schooled in the Philippines.

Usually college students are counting the days until spring break so they can go home or just hang out with friends at the beach. But many students throughout the U.S. are heading out to California, Texas, and Arizona not to have fun in the sun but to volunteer, as part of an Alternative Spring Break program, at LUPE (La Union del Pueblo Entero).

When Maria initially accepted help from the women who came knocking at her front door all she wanted was to get a driver’s license. For the mother of four children, one born with autism, being able to drive meant Maria could finally take her children to school and to their many doctor appointments.

My mother once told me: “Son, always share your talent with the church and place it at the service of God, for it was God who gave it to you.” These wise words have always accompanied my ministry and given me strength during difficult times.

Why bother to volunteer?
By Carmen Aguinaco
We often hear young people say, “When vacation time gets here, I’m going to sleep all day.” Sounds like quite an ambitious project, right? Others, however, think that when they have spare time they will volunteer to help out with a good cause. This too is ambitious, but less understandable. Why would you give up your precious time doing something that you will not be compensated for, at least with money?
