Lent: A time to repent
We often critique the acts of others with the intent of judging their actions. We invest substantial efforts in criticizing what we consider is not “morally correct” in the actions of others, that we forget to critique our own acts. Unfortunately, we don’t realize that judging others does not speak well of us as members of the community and of our identity as Christians. This desire to judge makes us similar to those who approached Jesus to tell him about the bad acts of others. We invest a great deal of energy commenting on what others do that little time is spent on our own reconciliation with God, and working to become worthy of His presence among us. Jesus not only invites us to repent, but also teaches us that a Father always waits for his children to bear fruits of faith, love and charity. He shows us that he is a patient and loving God, and just like the wine grower in the readings, God continues to give us opportunities to repent and grow closer to him, before we are cut and removed from his presence and grace. During this time of Lent, let us focus on centering our relationship with God always keeping in mind that sincere repentance is the first step to gaining forgiveness.
Are you in the habit of giving opportunities to those who have offended you or do you simply drive them out of your life? When you repent, do you do it from the heart or just in your words?
